As the mornings get colder and colder, the desire to get into the shower in the early morning hours to wash your hair may be lacking. So why take a shower every day to keep your hair clean?
Dry shampoo is a fabulous - and green! - alternative to washing your hair everyday. Scientifically speaking, our hair is naturally acidic in nature, so every day we get into the shower the very act of putting water on it can be damaging. Using dry shampoo is a green solution to damaging our hair and may even save time in the morning.
So how do you choose a dry shampoo? A personal favorite is LuLu Organics hair powder collection. With different scents like "lavender & clary sage" and "jasmine", you can pick a scent that appeals to you. So what do you do with it? Just pour a small amount in your hand (about the size of a quarter) and use small pinches to rub it into your scalp and roots of your hair so that it takes the oil out. Keep doing this until your hair is as oil-free and fresh as you want.
Not a fan of Lulu's $40 price tag? Then make some yourself!
Dry Shampoo
Adapted from Natural Beauty by Aldo Facetti
5 ounces (150 grams) coarse-ground cornmeal, semolina or couscous
30 drops essential oil of lemon
20 drops castor oil
Mix everything in a blender for a few seconds and then apply the same way as LuLu. Because of the cornmeal, you'll want to do this over the sink or tub. After you've applied, brush out and voila! Clean hair.
With either solution, you'll want to try it on the weekend or on a day off to see what works best for your hair. But no matter what you choose, you'll be saving your hair from chemicals, and saving water from the washing and electricity from the drying. Try it out and enjoy your clean and green hair.
