Houston Rockets center Yao Ming injured his foot in the 2009 NBA Playoffs forcing him to sit out the remaining games. At the time it was believed that Yao would be out for 8-12 weeks. Houston Rockets team physician, Dr. Tom Clanton told the Houston Chronicle that Yao's injury "has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career-threatening."
“One of the things we are trying to get is a consensus opinion on that, to make certain there is no option we are overlooking that would provide an earlier return or would be an option for treatment that he would prefer rather than doing additional surgery," said Clanton.
Now what do the Rockets do? Houston has one major free agent in Ron Artest, but he doesn't solve their problem in the paint. Dikembe Mutombo is retired and now Yao may miss the rest of the 2009/10 season.
“The realization has hit them that this is grave,” one NBA general manager said.
“It sounds like he’s missing most of next season, if not the entire 82 games,” the league executive said. “That’s all that the Rockets will concede quietly, but they know it’s probably much worse.”
Yao Ming will make $16 million next season with a player option for 2010/11 that would pay him over $17 million. The size of his contract coupled with his foot issues makes Yao virtually un-tradeable.
The Rockets also owe the oft-injured Tracy McGrady $22 million dollars for the upcoming season. It sucks to be the Rockets. Houston can only hope that Yao heals eventually and earns his salary in a uniform and not a suit.
Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey has declined to comment on Yao's future.
