Devin Harris

When you think about point guards in the Eastern Conference you may think about veterans like Allen Iverson, Mike Bibby, or Gilbert Arenas. There are also some impressive young guards like Jose Calderon, Rajon Rondo, and Derrick Rose. But in this early season the best point guard in the NBA plays in New Jersey. His name is Devin Harris.

Harris was traded to the Nets last year for future Hall-of-Famer Jason Kidd. New Jersey appears to have gotten the best of that blockbuster deal. Kidd has struggled to fit in with the Mavs while Harris has flourished with the Nets.

Harris is currently seventh in the league in scoring at 23.6 points a game. That makes him the Nets best scorer and the best scoring point guard throughout the league. Harris is 11th in the NBA in assists at 6.4 a game, and 13th in steals with 1.62 a game.

The Nets are a very good road team while oddly struggling at home. The team is 10-5 on the road and 5-12 at home. On December 1, Harris was named the Eastern Conference player of the week after dropping 47 points to go along with eight assists and seven rebounds in a 117-109 road win over the Suns.

More impressive than the statistics is the record of Harris' team. The New Jersey Nets are two games under .500 but still seventh best in the East and in the thick of the playoff race. None of the so-called experts would have guessed that the Nets would be 15-17 two months into the season. They are a surprise team and their success is mostly due to Devin Harris.

Currently, Dwyane Wade and Allen Iverson are the leading vote getters among Eastern Conference guards. Harris is fifth behind Wade, Iverson, Vince Carter and Ray Allen with 359,442 votes. Devin Harris is likely to be chosen by the coaches to participate in the All-Star Game, and his selection will be well deserved.
