Electric cars appear to be taking the world by storm. I can't seem to write enough about them (see my recent pieces on vintage conversions and the Killacycle record setting drag bike), Jay Leno is inviting celebrities to drive his parking lot race course in an all electic Ford Focus, and now even Motherproof.com - the car review site for moms - is oogling the new Tesla Model S electric family sedan.
Admittedly, though, I really would love to have this guy in my garage. Alas the wait extends at least until they start delivering - promised in 2011 - and probably through a long waiting list judging by the factory website's suggestion to "make a reservation".
Tesla promises 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, a 300 mile rage, 45 minute charge and room for 7! All this for about $50k. The price tag still seems a bit hefty to me - albeit hugely more affordable than the current 6-figure roadster - but the cool factor of an electric daily driver has me just silly with excitement.
A message to Courtney Messenbaugh over at Motherproof - when you get your Model S test car, let's do lunch!
