At a press conference yesterday, Gov. Rendell said that the state Treasury would start running numbers to calculate the current pay owed to all state workers, and the paychecks would start going out next week.
After the vote on the Frankenbudget, House Democrats issued a press release saying they ‘led the charge’ to pay state workers who have been going without pay since July 1st.
Before they cast the vote, Democrats made sure their own party members got their paychecks before the workers.
The House Comptrollers Office confirmed this morning that it cut checks for Democrats on Tuesday, while state workers will not be paid until next week at the very earliest. A spokesman for House Majority Leader Todd Eachus, D- Luzerne, confirmed the payments.
When asked why Democratic lawmakers decided to pay themselves first Marcy responded;
"We have always had the ability to pay our Members throughout this budget impasse, but our leadership team made the decision early on that we would not pay our Members until we passed a bill that would allow state workers to get paid. We passed that bridge bill yesterday, and the Governor just signed it today."
He went onto to say it was ‘regrettable’ state workers were caught in the budgetary crossfire of everything.
This move has outraged Republicans who have been going without pay since June 1st.
After the Morning Call first broke the story, one Republican lawmaker told them, ‘"I hope you beat the **** out of them.”
Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pigleggi, R- Delaware, was a little more reserved, "We certainly think our members should be paid," he said. "But we will likely not pay our members before state workers are paid."
