With races in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York's 23rd stealing the show for tomorrow's elections, many can forget about the importance of elections within their own state and districts.
Democrats in PA hold a voter registration advantage over Republicans to the tune of 1.2 million people. In 2008, Barack Obama easily carried the state by a 10 point margin, and just across the Delaware everyone's eyes are on New Jersey Governors race, the closest race statistically one day out.
Perhaps the most closely watched race in PA is that of the Supreme Court, which has Republican Judge Joan Orie Melvin against Democrat Jack Panella.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Karl Rove had this to say about the race, “"A GOP victory would indicate trouble for Democrats in a state Mr. Obama carried by 10 points”, Rove also added that this race has 'national implications'.
Despite the 1.2 million voter advantage over Democrats over Republicans, this race is considerably close.
A majority tend to think that 'off-year' elections are meaningless, but that is not the case. Most of the state and county judges will also be chosen tomorrow.
Many in PA will also be selecting new treasurers, controllers, sheriffs, coroners, auditors, tax collectors, constables, as well as nominees for supervisors and council members.
State and local elections can have a considerable impact on your lives, perhaps even more so than national elections. Due to this reason, take the time research each candidate and don't forget to get out and vote!
