The fourth Sunday of each month is "Family Chess Day" at the Central Branch of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries.
Lead by U.S. Chess Federation National Champion, Gjon Feinstein, this class is open to children and parents who want to learn and play together.
Gjon is well-known throughout the Santa Cruz school and chess communities as a knowledgeable and patient instructor. He understands the game, but more important, understands how to teach it.
Each "Family Chess Day" provides parents and their children a chance to share the challenging world of chess. For some parents (your writer included), it provides the opportunity to be humbled by all their children have learned from Gjon.
The first session is 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., and is for children eight-years-old and younger.
The second session runs from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and is for children nine and up.
This is the perfect opportunity for Cub Scouts to work on their Chess Belt Loop and Pin.
