Writing can be healing in many ways. Journaling is a personal way to use writing to heal. There are as many ways to journal as there are people. One has to do the journaling method that works best for him or her. Many people do not know how to enjoy journaling because they feel they must do it every day in order for it to be effective. Or, they believe they have to write a certain number of pages for it to work. These ideas are not necessarily true. A journaling practice can be every day or less frequently. Journaling can be a few words or pages of writing. Journaling can be done according to prompts or free form. There is no right way.

Journaling can free up creative ideas. It can clear one’s mind. It can help one to gain more clarity about his or her own life.

Here is a list of ways in which journaling can be used to heal oneself:

1. Create a dream journal. Write down dreams had the night before when arising. Refer to this for insights into life when feeling stuck or needing guidance.

2. Journal about the day. Write about what needs to be done before the day begins. If writing at night, write about the day so sleep is more restful with a clear mind.

3. Write down what is irritating or annoying. Let it all out. Take some deep breaths and allow the feelings of peace and calm to wash over.

4. Create an idea journal. Carry around a small notebook to collect ideas throughout the day. Refer to it when needing a project or some creative inspiration.

5. Journal about the future. Write down details about what would like to be created in one’s life. Refer to it later to see anything came true. This can be an exciting exercise.

6. Write stories in a journal. If one is an aspiring fiction writer, this helps one to collect ideas for writing a novel. Or, if one writes non-fiction, this exercise helps to bring more right-brain creativity into the writer’s life.

7. Create a gratitude journal. Write down things for which one is grateful for and this will help to focus one on what matters most in life. This can be a gratifying exercise that fills one’s life with blessings and love.

8. Write down anything that comes to mind. This is free style journaling. Just allow what ever comes to mind to be put onto the paper. Sometimes, ideas and inspirations come pouring forth via this exercise.
