The role of ring bearer in today’s modern wedding has its roots in medieval times. Young boys called pages or page boys were trained in the inner workings of the great manor houses and castles. Often their main duties were running errands and making deliveries. Special deliveries may have been presented on velvet pillows to signify the importance of what was being delivered.Flap Style Ring Bearer Pillow

Symbolic but important job
Today it is the wedding custom for a young boy under the age of about ten to be selected to be the ring bearer. This honor is normally bestowed on a member of either the family of the bride or groom. The function is mostly honorary but important none-the-less. His job is to deliver the rings at the ceremony in the same way that pages brought messages to the lords and ladies of long ago. In reality, today the best man usually holds the rings and the young page or ring bearer carries only symbolic rings. Usually the ring bearer walks down the aisle with the flower girl. Depending on which religious or denominational tradition the bride follows, the order in which the ring bearer enters will vary. The wedding planner or officiant typically arranges all the participants in proper order for the processional

So many options
There are a number of pillow styles that can be used for ring bearer pillows. A square cushion style, a flat flap with ribbon ties or the knife edge pillow all make excellent ring bearer pillows. Fabrics such as linen, dupioni silk, faille or satin are selected because of their luxurious qualities. Welted edges may be of self fabric or in a contrast color or fabric. Pillows are usually made in white or ivory, but often the trim or even the pillow itself may be used to introduce the bride’s wedding colors. In choosing a ring bearer pillow, the pillow size should be in proportion to the actual ring bearer. A pillow that is too large will be too difficult for a young boy to handle. On the other hand, a small pillow may be lost among all the other décor.

Multi-purpose pillow
At The Linen House, ring bearer pillows are made to serve a dual purpose. At the ceremony, the pillow plays the symbolic role of carrying the rings. After the ceremony, the pillow is used as a boudoir pillow, serving as a keepsake of the wedding. Ribbons, trims and fringe can decorate the pillow. The Linen House pillows can be ordered with hand slots on the back. This is a band of ribbon stitched so the ring bearer can slip his hands under the ribbon on the underside of the pillow. Then, no matter how nervous or fidgety the ring bearer becomes, the pillow does not slip and fall.

Personalization
Brides may choose to have the ring bearer pillow monogrammed. If the bride and groom are a stickler for etiquette, the bride will have her pillow monogrammed with the married surname as the large letter in the middle. The bride’s first initial appears on the left of the surname initial. Her maiden name initial appears on the right. The web site for Crane & Company stationers gives several scenarios where, no matter what the previous marital status, the proper sequence of initials remains unchanged.  When brides want a lifelong wedding keepsake, the monogrammed ring bearer pillow should be at the top of their list.

Fringed Ring Bearer PillowBecause of the great variety of options for brides, the choice of ring bearer pillow should be a reflection of the bride’s personality and style matched to the young man who will serve her as ring bearer.
