The hottest trends and fashion designs don't just start in New York and LA, they can start right here in Kansas City. With all my interest in the West 18th St. fashion show, I was honored to be able to have a sit down with one of the up and coming designers in the show, Abigail Carolina. Abigail describes her design style as colorful and feminine, but with an edge. She has degrees in art and fashion. Her specialty is women's wear particularly dresses from casual to formal. Below is all talk about things pretty:
Me: How did you get interested in fashion?
Abigail Carolina: Growing up, my mom and my grandma made clothes and costumes for me for all kinds of events. As I grew older I would go shopping and find something I liked and think, "I could make this"..so that is what I did. It started as a hobby but grew into a passion.
Me: What is your educational background in fashion?
AC: I have a B.A. in Art History from the University of Kansas and a A.A.S. in Fashion Design from Johnson County Community College. I also interned with a well-known local designer for 2 years. These combined experiences have shaped my background as a designer and business owner.
Me: Why did you choose your name for the name of your designs?
AC: I was searching for a name that would best represent my style and vision for my line. Abigail Carolina are my first and middle names and sound like they describe the fun, yet sophisticated styles that I design.
Me: What designers are you inspired by?
AC: Alexander McQueen and John Galliano are two of the most innovative designers of our time. Their styles are extravagant, dramatic and over the top, yet still wearable.
Me: Will this be your first time showing your pieces in a huge show?
AC:I have done some shows in the past, however the West 18th Street Fashion Show is the largest and most exciting event I have participated in thus far. I am also very excited about collaborations with Bangs Salon and Amanda Williams for Dollface Aesthetics who will be doing hair and make up for the show. Their creative efforts have helped to further my vision of the Summer in Space theme.
Me: What advice would you give someone whose dream it is to be a designer in the fab fashion world?
AC: It is a great idea to get involved with an educational institution that will teach you the in's and out's of the fashion world. However, the experience that one can learn from an internship is invaluable to furthering your career. Finally, getting involved in local events and building relationships with other designers and event producers opens doors for more and more opportunities.
