Traveling Virginia’s Interstate-66 from Washington D.C. or Front Royal takes you past an up and coming wine region. Five wineries are along the central part of the Interstate between Marshall (Exit 27) and Markham (Exit 18). All five wineries in this area are in Delaplane (map). From the Baltimore or Washington D.C. area you can visit Miracle Valley Winery. The winery is a small family-operated winery that opened in August 2007. The tasting room is small and cozy. A deck overlooking the vineyards and countryside provides additional seating. You can enjoy wines made from the noble grapes such as Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. You can also try a wine made with an ancient white grape Rkatsiteli.

Barrel Oak Winery opened in May 2008 and quickly became the event winery along Interstate-66. Brian and Sharon Roeder researched wineries before building their facility. The result is a state of the art tasting room and winery. There is plenty of room to spread out in the tasting room along a long counter or at tables. A second floor lounge area gives added space. Weekly entertainment brings many visitors to this winery who will enjoy the wine and entertainment in a down to earth atmosphere. Spend time on the deck taking in the bucolic setting.

Close by is Vintage Ridge Winery. It is more expensive to taste wines at this tasting room than the other area wineries. However, the wine tasting experience is one that should not be passed up. Wine tastings are accompanied with a plate of food and visitors are encouraged to experiment pairing the food with the wines. You should plan at least two hours at this winery tasting room. If you are new to wine be sure to use the wine scent kit available. The kit has vials of liquid that represent aromas found in different wines.

Three Fox Vineyards is located on a beautiful spot in the countryside. The vineyards are well kept and you should take the time to stroll along them. You will have an opportunity to taste wines made in an Italian style. Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese are two of the Italian grape varieties grown in the vineyard. After tasting the wines, consider purchasing a bottle and find a spot on the property to have a picnic. The setting is serene and you should take time to enjoy it.

Delaplane Cellars will be the newest winery in the area slated to open in 2009. Although you can visit the wineries in Delaplane in one day, consider taking your time and spending the evening. Stroll through the vineyards, have a picnic lunch and discover the aromas and tastes of the grapes grown in this area.
