The second annual Drink Regional Wine Week is scheduled for October 11th through the 17th. During the week wine writers and wine bloggers throughout the United States and Canada will write about regional wines. The event is sponsored by DrinkLocalWine.com who hopes to attract more than 50 writers and bloggers. These writers will write about wines from around “here” wherever “here” might be. It is important to note that the DrinkLocalWine site defines itself as being exclusive of California and the Northern Pacific.
“Here” and “local” are difficult words to define. When asking a waiter for a local wine on the east coast, the waiter returned with a California wine. The wine was over 2500 miles away. That is not necessarily here or local. Many people have different definitions of “here” and “local”. Some of these definitions include: within thirty minutes, a one-hour or two-hour drive, the state and a tri-state region. This author prefers the one-hour to two-hour drive. That makes for a convenient day trip to wineries in many parts of the country. In Maryland and Virginia, driving two hours will take you to several wineries from most parts of those states.
On the other hand many people can walk to their local wine store. However the selection of local and regional wines may be slim at best. If you want to taste the place during Drink Regional Wine Week it is best to visit a winery. Now if you want to taste a local wine made with grapes grown locally you’ll have to do some research. Inquire, if not stated on the wine bottle, about where the grapes were sourced. Local wineries do not always make wine with local grapes.
What is the taste of the place where you live?
