Regional wine week is coming to a close. Have you had some regional wine? Those living in Central Maryland can visit Black Ankle Vineyards in Mt. Airy about a 45-minute drive from the Baltimore Beltway and Interstate 70. Once exiting I-70, most of the route to the winery is along rolling roads with fall colored trees lining the way. The driveway to the winery winds past some of the more than twenty acres of vineyards. As of mid-October, Syrah grapes were still hanging from the vines.
The parking area and tasting room will be in front of you just past the vineyards. There is a short walkway from the parking area to the tasting room past a nicely landscaped area. Wild flowers color a large area reminding one of nature and habitat. Black Ankle’s tasting room is an architectural delight. This is a green building to the extreme including a portion with a living roof. The inside is cozy and a perfect place to taste the wines the vineyards outside the tasting room produce.
Black Ankle Vineyards offer wine travelers a “taste the place” experience. The wines are made only from grapes grown onsite. The twenty-two and a half acres of vineyards are farmed using biodynamic techniques including compost instead of chemical fertilizers. Tractors run on biodiesal fuel and vineyard management employs techniques to discourage pests.
The wines are made from grapes that are young. The vineyards were planted in 2003 and 2004. Although there are white wines including Bedlam 2008, the best white blend in the 2009 Governors Cup competition, Black Ankle produces dry reds that can complement any meal. Compare the Crumbling Rock 2006 and 2007, which have similar blends and different tasting profiles. These two wines won back-to-back state competitions. The 2006 was the winner of the 2008 Governor’s Cup while the 2007 was the winner of the 2009 Governor’s Cup. Passeggiata is a blend of several grapes. It can easily pass as a red wine for white wine drinkers. It is a perfect wine for leisure time. If you prefer bold tannins try the 2007 Leaf Stone Syrah. This blend is 91% Syrah with a splash of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
For people who enjoy dry wines made from viniferous grapes, visit Black Ankle Vineyards. You will be able to taste the place.
