What is utterly heartbreaking and tragic is that the footage of what would have been Michael Jackson’s comeback reveals what is undoubtedly the biggest and best work of his career. How revealing it seemed, that despite Michael’s frail and gaunt figure, the very same one that would succumb to a drug overdose days later, he was one million percent on fire. For Michael, the music was his muse, his inspiration, his life focus, and with the music, he was the sorcerer.
The “This Is It” documentary, for a generation to come who may have never heard of Michael Jackson, would be one of the most important pieces of tape that could, in any way, restore integrity to a name that had been criticized and tarnished in the years before his death. Michael, who claimed severe physical and emotional abuse by his father as a child, had his own reputation as a father ripped to shreds by the press, for his seemingly oddball and misunderstood notions of parenthood, not to mention the infamous accounts of sexual abuse for which the Supreme Court ultimately decided in Michael’s defense, but which left Michael devastated.
The footage, however, shows a confident, professional, mature, and passionate side of Michael that is neither facetious nor camp. Without a voiceover or storyline, what exists in the two hour film is a simple collage of rehearsals for the world tour, a powerfully intimate portrait of Michael’s last days on stage. “A final curtain call,” as he hauntingly put it, This Is It is a point of incredible focus and determination for Michael to have the last word on his image. The result – a glimpse at the magnitude and impeccability of Michael’s musical and creative vision. For a man who was sometimes called a man-child and whose everyday was a performance, “This Is It” stands as a testament to his incredible work as an artist, as well as the deeper indications of his personal struggle to succeed. It seems, in fact, Michael has gotten his wish – a chance to reclaim his throne as King. And to the millions of fans, who had always been at the forefront of his mind, this is, indeed, it.
