If you didn't get tickets to Girl Talk at the Ogden or 3OH!3 at the Gothic this Halloween evening, that sucks, because both shows promise to totally deliver. But don't fret! Denver is going to be crazy with some other great shows and tons of Halloween parties. Here are a few of the good ones::
1082 Broadway Denver
$15
The interior of Vinyl can be daunting to the not-so-average clubber, as multi-level danceplex is often teeming with drunk people and can feel like a fire hazard, but the now-infamous venue has hosted everyone from Paul Oakenfold to MSTRKRFT. Tonight, 15 bucks will get you Ghostface Killah, one-ninth of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan.
Ghostface's flow is fast and forceful and can border on goofy (maybe that's just due to the look on his face most of the time) but like most of his Wu counterparts, his genius lies in sick throwback samples and beats.
Widowers, Black Lamb, Hello Kavita, Wetlands, Tangible Stereo
2701 Larimer St. Denver
(Price at door)
I'm not dissing the other bands on this bill by any means because they're all amazing, but my recommendation for this show goes to Wetlands. Over-the-top rock n' roll with the skills to back it up, Wetlands are sludgy and succinct, bringing to mind a pre-Mellon Collie Smashing Pumpkins. Wetlands kind of sound like if Steve Miller were beat to a pulp, doused in Miller HIgh Life, and run through a Big Muff.
Monofog, Bad Luck City, Hearts of Palm, Natural Selection
The Hi-Dive 7 S. Broadway Denver
$6
Monofog, a Denver-by-way-of-Fort Collins act who have dominated the local scene for over well over five years play the Hi-Dive tonight. Vocalist Haley Helmericks sort of sounds like Grace Slick with a heart and a purpose, and Monofog reminds me of a more dangerous Lush. Maybe it's the 90s in me that pulls me toward this band, but their brand of heavy rock warmed with love comes through in a killer live show.
I kind of like Monofog's own description from their Myspace...sounds like: someone just fell down the stairs.
