Thanks to the influx of spandex courtesy of American Apparel and the faux-“Frankie Goes to Hollywood” shirts being sold at Target, kids have been re-living the glamour of the 80s for several years now. Luckily, a lot of the music from this re-vamped era has come in the form of fun, intelligent, pop-culturally saturated packages like Chromeo, Justice, MIA, and the elfishly darling French sensation Yelle.
Vocalist Julie Budet, also known as Yelle, collaborates with her close friend, producer GrandMarnier to create catchy, bouncy pop-tunes for the masses. She's got the image perfected, and the simplicity of mainstream American music down pat...and does it all in French. I have no clue what she’s singing about most of the time, but much like rap music, a lot of the appeal of Yelle lies in her comforting flow and the sound of her voice.
Chosen as MTV’s “Artist of the Week” this past March, Yelle got some much deserved exposure (even if MTV would never actually play her videos) and she recently was featured in French ads for Reebok. At a super-cheap 16 bucks, Yelle plays the Ogden Theater this Friday, October 24th, with Funeral Party, and Denver locals Astra Moveo. I would recommend this sweaty dance party as good preparation for the Girl Talk hustle-jam extravaganza happening at the Ogden theater on Halloween..if you have already scored tickets. That show is sold out, so do yourself a favor and catch Yelle instead!
In the clip below, see Yelle speak on her pseudo-contemporary, Britney Spears. She wants to get inside Brit's head and fix things. How cute!
