After completing their epic world tour, “U2 360”, a mere two days earlier in Vancouver, U2 hit the stage at the legendary Madison Square Garden in NYC to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Other big acts who performed on Friday included Metallica with Lou Reed, Annie Lennox and Lenny Kravitz, and Jeff Beck with Sting and Buddy Guy, as well as others.
As per U2gigs.com, U2 played last and their lineup was just as star-studded. Mick Jagger sang “Gimme Shelter” with the band, who was also joined by singer Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas. The opening act from the second leg of “360” also performed their song “Where is the Love?” with U2. Jagger also sang on “Stuck in a Moment”.
Perhaps one of the biggest moments of the show was when U2 performed with Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith on “Because the Night”. There were a couple of technical difficulties with the song, so it kept being re-done. Springsteen also stayed with U2 during “I Still Haven’t Found”. U2 dedicated the song to him on his birthday during the Giants Stadium show on the tour this year.
U2 also played many more of their own hits, including opener “Vertigo”, as well as “Magnificent”, and “Beautiful Day” which closed the show. The setlist can be found here.
I was actually in NYC on Friday night to celebrate my writer and fellow U2 fan Amy’s birthday, and we walked to the Garden after the show let out to try and sneak a peek of U2 walking out (no luck though!) A couple of people we talked to who attended the show had mixed reactions.
A couple said that U2 was fantastic. They were at the other Hall of Fame show on Thursday night (with Springsteen and the E Street Band), and said U2’s show was a lot better. Another person said that Bono was not on his game Friday night, that he seemed nervous and a little off and confused as to what he should be doing. They said Bruce Springsteen was the bigger highlight of both shows.
Was anyone there? Did Bono seem not like his usual self? He did just finish a massive tour, and then had to perform with musical legends so maybe he had a right to be nervous. Both concerts at the Garden are being edited down and will premiere on HBO in November.
Of course, my only complaints about the show were the enormous ticket prices and the fact that the Black Eyed Peas were there. And this is just me going on a rant, so I’m sorry, but I don’t consider the BEP’s rock and roll nor proper U2 collaborators. Songs like “Don’t Phunk With My Heart” and “Boom Boom Pow” shouldn’t be a U2 stage. Other great acts had way more potential to be on stage with U2 during the Hall of Fame show. I was so annoyed when I found out they were there. I really hope they don’t come back to “360” next year and U2 gets a better opening act this time around. Muse was amazing, and they deserve another chance. Basically, anyone does as long as it doesn’t involve the Black Eyed Peas.
Here’s “Because the Night” with PROPER rock and roll legends, Springsteen and Patti Smith, with U2. Video by bitchkeepsbitchin (sounds a LOT like me).
