This is the week: CMA Fest and Bonnaroo! While some daring souls will be making the trek out to Manchester for Bruce Springsteen and Phish, many of us will be sticking to our daily grind here in town. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have our own fun.

You already know you can hear free music downtown during CMA Fest, right? While the lineup at the Music City Zone features music of every genre, a fair share of country acts will be there. Two acts, both playing Friday, may already have legions of loyal fans nationwide, thanks to reality TV.

The first, KingBilly, will take the stage at Public Square at 1pm Friday. The local band is known for mixing country/bluegrass with pop/rock for a fun, lively show. Made of six members, the band has gained their local following by playing regular live shows here in Nashville. (Catch their long-running live act, KingBilly is Your Friend, at 12th & Porter.) However, their fan base grew last year when a reality TV show about them ran on GAC.

Another local favorite in the country scene is the band Sixwire, who will play this Friday at 2pm. Each of its five members had been touring with major country acts when they decided to form their own band in the year 2000. A record deal with Warner Brothers led to some success for their first CD, but shakeups at the label kept Sixwire from releasing a mainstream follow-up. Then in 2007, they were featured on the FOX competition show The Next Great American Band. They fought hard and came in second. Their close finish, however, led them to become the house band for CMT’s Can You Duet?

While these bands are staples for Nashville country fans, their throngs of loyal TV fans should love the chance to catch them for free while in town this week.
