The pro-life amendment offered by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich) and Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-Penn), that prohibits federal funding of abortion under the health care bill in the U.S. House, was passed.
This cleared the way for the Blue-Dog democrats and others opposed to abortion to vote for the healthcare bill.
It’s a good news-bad news situation. The good news is that there is a pro-life amendment. The bad news is that the current version of the universal healthcare passed the house late last night.
It is a sure bet that the pro-abortion factions in the Democratic Party will do their best to either water the pro-life amendment down, nullify or remove it, as it passes through various committees.
Now, the ball has been passed into the court of the Senate. If the Senate passes a national healthcare bill, then the two versions will have to be reconciled into a final version of the bill for the President to sign.

Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ):
"We applaud the pro-life commitment shown by the Democrat and Republican members of the House who voted to approve the Stupak/Pitts Amendment which prohibits federal funding of abortion. The passage of this pro-life amendment represents the only bright spot in an otherwise troubling government-run health care package put forth by House Speaker Pelosi. The American people understand that health care should not include federal funding for abortion and we're grateful to Congressmen Bart Stupak and Joseph Pitts for their unrelenting efforts in protecting the unborn. Unfortunately, the leadership in the House has produced a disturbing and flawed health care package that not only fails to meet the needs of most Americans, but interjects an unprecedented level of government intrusion and bureaucracy into health care."
