Terranea Resort, south of Los Angeles, is launching a series of movie industry-themed camps for children, tweens and teens as part of its unique programming for younger guests. Offered seasonally during winter, spring and summer breaks, the camps include movie production, video game creation, Jedi training, fencing and fashion design. The first camps begin the week of December 16.
The camps to debut include:
Movie Production (Grades 7-10)
Movie production is the perfect camp for anyone interested in making their own movies. Coordinated by Planet Bravo, a company specializing in multimedia education for student's ages 5 to 16, this class takes students through the process of movie creation from development through production. In the course of five days, students work in small production groups to plan, produce, edit and package their own short videos. Students work on computers to edit scenes, add special effects and render their final products. All students leave camp with a DVD of their movie. Cost: $495 per student.
Video Game Creation (Grades 4-6):
Also coordinated by Planet Bravo, this class teaches students how to make their own interactive video game. Students start the course with a blank white stage and fill it with original characters, sets and props. In a few simple clicks, they assign behaviors and conditions to their objects, and the game comes to life. This camp course is not only fun, but also incredibly engaging and educational since it requires math and logic. All students leave camp with their games online and on a USB drive. Cost: $495 per student.
Fashion Camp (8-16 years old)
Designed for ages 8 to 16, Terranea's fashion camp is lead by Jill Ohanneson, a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles and veteran TV and film costume designer with shows like Trauma, Six Feet Under, Swingtown and Lie to Me among her credits. Ohanneson introduces participants to the world of fashion design and even allows them to put their creativity to the test by fashioning their own designs. Campers research current fashion trends and style icons, design their own looks, shop for fabrics and clothing, and present their finished "line" in a fashion show. Each girl will leave the camp with an outfit they have styled or piece of clothing that they have constructed, along with either a DVD of the Fashion Show (8-12 year olds) or still photos from a photo shoot of their designs (13-16 year olds). Cost: $600 (8-12 years) and $750 (13-16 years).
Jedi Training Camp (4-12 years old)
In partnership with Swordplay Studio in Burbank, Terranea presents Jedi training camp for children ages 4-12. Campers create their own Jedi character and develop their balance and coordination through fun Jedi training games, practice flight simulation (courtesy of Nintendo and Playstation), study of astronomy and lessons in how to wield a lightsaber. Students also learn the art of lightsaber battle, just as it is taught to Hollywood stunt pros, from professionally trained instructors. Surprise visits from some of the favorite Star Wars characters, as guest instructors, make this an experience of a lifetime. Cost: $500 per participant.
Fencing Camp
Campers are introduced to one of Hollywood's favorite art forms- fencing! Students receive instruction in footwork and technique, take part in fencing drills and games, learn about the history of fencing and even compete in an in-class fencing tournament. Cost: $380 per participant.
Each camp is five days long and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Upcoming dates include:
2009 Camps: December 19- 23 and December 26-30 (no Jedi or Fencing Camp)
2010 Camps: April 5-9, April 12-16, June 14-18 and June 21-25
A resort stay is not required to participate in the camps and no experience is necessary. A special $195 per room rate will be offered to all participants during the camp dates. Cost for the camps range from $380 to $750 and include a buffet lunch each day.
