1. Don’t over indulge on the first night. Yes, the champagne and cocktails may be flowing but they’ll all be there the next night. You don’t want a hangover that will last for the next four days, finally clearing up when you’re on the flight home.
2. Watch the food intake, also. What do you usually have for lunch while you're at home? Is it a salad and a little taste of something and maybe some water or a diet soda? Does that compare with the chil dog, fried rice, milkshake and chocolate mousse you’ve just downed poolside at the resort? That stomach ache isn’t from the water in a
different country, it’s gastrointestinal distress caused by pigging out.
3. Feeling, oh, about 50 pounds heavier than usual, even though you’ve been watching your calories? That would be your salt intake, which probably started inching up dramatically from the moment you got on the plane. Food that you enjoy on the road is invariably going to be saltier than what you ingest at home, that’s just the nature of prepared foods. Drinks lots of water to resolve this and don’t eat everything that’s put in front of you. You don’t need that Munchie Mix on the plane; you will be able to eat more sensibly once you’re on the ground, I promise you.
4. Dress comfortably. Don’t wear that outfit you’ve been hiding in the back of your closet on this vacation. You know, the one with the tight waistline that never really fit right, even in the store, but you bought it anyway because you hoped one day to trim down? Unless you truly have trimmed down, don't crowd your suitcase with useless apparel.
5. Along those lines, don’t dress too comfortably. I can never get over those people I see on the plane wearing sweatsuits and sneakers. What is up with that? Dress respectably, as if you’re going out in public, where others will see you. Once at your destination, don’t wander around a sophisticated city in a Hawaiian shirt, big baggy shorts and running shoes. You’re giving the rest of us Americans a bad name.
