When the NBA's referees were locked out, it was easy to surmise there would be some controversy during the preseason.

How true.

Over the last week, four NBA coaches have been fined a total of $215,000 for criticizing the replacement referees.

It's a tough spot for the replacement referees to be in. But until the regular officials return -- and it looks like it could happen by the regular season -- controversy is sure to follow.

The Sixers lost to the Wizards 90-89 in a preseason game Tuesday at the Wachovia Center. And the game turned on a bizarre call with three-tenths of a second remaining.

Willie Green was whistled for a foul while Washington's Mike James was attempting a 3-pointer. Replays showed that Green didn't touch James.

The call was made and James hit two of three free throws to seal the win.

Green didn't complain too vehemently because he understood this was just the preseason.

Now, the regular referees aren't perfect, but the likes of Dick Bavetta and Steve Javie clearly wouldn't have called a phantom foul like that.
