The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit public health advocacy group, has released a report questioning the superiority of bottled water over tap water. In their study of 188 bottled water brands, one of EWG’s researchers says that 25 percent of water sold is simply “tap water”; others estimate that the numbers could be closer to 45 percent. And considering that you pay 1900 times more for bottled water than municipal tap, it’s something to seriously consider.

So, what should you be drinking? EWG recommends that consumers drink filtered tap water; it’s less expensive, many impurities are taken out, and eliminates the need for multitudes of disposable plastic bottles. Also, if you have children in the household, there is no guarantee that they will receive a sufficient amount of fluoride from bottled water, as they would with tap water.

EWG also advocates stronger federal standards that would require companies to disclose more information about the origins of their bottled water and testing procedures and results.

Where do you find information on bottled and tap water and how safe it is?

  • The Minnesota Department of Health Web site has a page on frequently asked questions regarding the difference between the two types of water and how information on bottled water is disclosed and regulated.
  • If you want to know the specific results of water testing in your area, you can request a state water quality report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • If you are going to drink bottled water, EWG has rated many of the top brands and displays a list of the ones they recommend on their website.
  • Once you know what you need to filter out of your municipal water, do some research on types of filtration and how they fulfill your requirements.

Happy hydration in the land of 10,000 lakes!
