Medicare’s double digit cuts which are scheduled to go into effect in January 2010 will have a serious effect on cardiologists and radiologists.
Heart and cancer related problems are the leading reason for medical treatment and, ultimately, death among those 65 and over.
Both oncologists and cardiologists have indicated that the large cuts directed at their specialties will result in 3 possible outcomes:
Obviously this poses a significant risk for those persons on a fixed income.
The American College of Cardiology has estimated that cardiologists would see payments for two common procedures decrease dramatically. The payment for an echocardiogram will be cut by 42%. Cardiac catheterization reimbursements will be cut by 24%.
Will life saving treatments for cancer and heart conditions be out of the reach of seniors? Time will tell.
