Seve Ballesteros, the charismatic Spanish golf legend, said he is recovering well from a malignant brain tumor. In October, 2008 Ballesteros collapsed in Madrid and was rushed to hospital.
A brain tumor was confirmed and a biopsy showed it to be cancer. Surgeons at Madrid's La Paz Hospital reported that after a 12 hour surgery a sizable part of the tumor had been removed. The tumor was classified as a cancerous oligoastrocytoma,
A second surgery was required to remove a part of the skull when the brain began to swell. Despite his weakened conditions doctors felt they had no choice but to perform a third surgery to remove the remaining part of the tumor located deep in the brain. At the time doctors said Ballesteros condition was “worrying.”
After being released from the hospital he was back in the hospital in early December, 2008. He had to undergo a fourth brain surgery, this time to drain fluid from the brain. Doctors considered it a set back but the golf legend was determined to recover.
After his discharge from the hospital, Ballesteros returned to his home in northern Spain and began an aggressive treatment of chemotherapy as an outpatient. After the first round of chemotherapy, Ballesteros wrote on his website
"I am very motivated and working hard although I am aware that my recovery will be slow and therefore I need to be patient and have a lot of determination. For these reasons I am following strictly all the instructions that the doctors are giving me.”
Ballesteros completed a second course of chemotherapy at Madrid's Le Paz Hospital in February 2009. The results were very positive. A third round of chemotherapy was finished in March, 2009 and a fourth and final round was finished about a month later.
Reports continued to be positive and in June, Ballesteros made his first public appearance and declaring it a “miracle” to be alive. At that appearance, Ballesteros announced the launch of the 'Seve Ballesteros Foundation'.
