Half Moon Bay offers free music series
Sometimes the best things in life are free.
Latin sound kicks off the 14th year of the Summer Concerts series this Sunday at Mac Dutra Park in of Half Moon Bay.Cuban, Latin Jazz as well as Caribbean and Central American music will fill the streets of the downtown coastal town from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. when the eight musicians of Buena Mezcla play the first of four free concerts this summer.
The concerts are held every second Sunday from June through September.
Presented by the
Coastal Arts League in conjunction the
Half Moon Bay Parks and Recreation Department, the origins of the music series lay in the Gallery Hop days in the early 1990’s. The arts organization worked with local galleries and downtown merchants to present monthly summer events on Friday nights. Included in the events was “Music at Mac Dutra” with performers ranging from Salsa dancers to barber shot quartets.
The
Coastal Arts League offered in 1995 to raise the funds for monthly afternoon concerts at Mac Dutra Park. Half Moon Bay city officials eagerly accepted the offer and incorporated the music series into plans to improve the park which had become user unfriendly and was attracting criminal activity at night.
So successful were the efforts to improve the park, that the 1996 United Nations Habitat II in Istanbul recognized the community project given special mention to the Summer Concert Series.
