New York is America’s favorite city. The Big Apple is also the “Friendliest and Most Helpful” and the “Least Friendly and Helpful” city.

That’s according to a new survey from TripAdvisor, which also found that Portland, Ore., is the country’s most underrated – and the cleanest – destination.

“Portland, Oregon is a major U.S. city that doesn't get a whole lot of publicity, but is a gem in the eyes of TripAdvisor travelers,” Michele Perry, vice president of communications for TripAdvisor, said in a news release. “Detroit on the other hand may be suffering a residual effect of the automotive industry collapse, as travelers ran all over Motown.”

Other interesting results include:

Favorite City

  1. New York City
  2. San Francisco
  3. Chicago and Boston (tie)

Least Favorite City

  1. Detroit
  2. Los Angeles
  3. Atlanta

Most Underrated

  • Portland, Ore.

Most Overrated

  • Las Vegas

More than 3,400 people participated in the survey. “To put Portland’s underrated standing in perspective, Las Vegas received in excess of 100 times more searches on TripAdvisor than Oregon's largest city from January through May 2009,” the company said in the news release.
