Who's the poster child for misbehavior in the NFL? In the past few years, it's been Adam "Pacman" Jones, the troubled cornerback formerly of the Tennessee Titans and Dallas Cowboys. But now, league commissioner Roger Goodell may have a new candidate for that unwanted role -- Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall.
This weekend, the three-year NFL veteran was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct in Atlanta after an altercation at 5:58 a.m. Marshall's latest transgression will almost certainly bring another suspension from Goodell, as the wide out was already banished for the first game of the 2008 season.
Since getting a slight reprieve from the commissioner last year -- Marshall's suspension was reduced from three games to one -- the receiver has gone to great lengths to show that he's turned his life around. He's said all of the right things, decided to get married in an attempt to "settle down" and seemed to be headed down a better path. But in the early hours of Sunday morning, that proved to be nothing more than lip service.
Marshall has had 12 prior run-ins with the law, a sign that his behavior this weekend was a continuation of a pattern, not an aberration. And that's just counting the documented incidents.
There's no evidence that Marshall will ever learn his lesson. Getting into an altercation that contributed to his teammate being gunned down on Speer Boulevard didn't wake him up. Injuring his arm to the point where he had to play the entire 2008 season with numbness in the back of his hand didn't help. And missing one game and two other checks last year didn't get the message across.
Brandon Marshall is a troublemaker. Broncos fans might not like to hear that, but it's true. He's in the same category as Pacman Jones and all of the other NFL misfits.
He's intelligent and likable, so he gets a free pass. Oh, and he's a heck of a wide receiver, too. But none of those things should forgive this type of stupidity. With millions of dollars on the line, Marshall can't avoid getting arrested. He barely went nine months between altercations. That's someone who doesn't want to change his behavior. And that's someone Broncos fans should refuse to support.
