The Colorado Avalanche are off to a semi-disappointing 3-3 start, but it's not because of their offense.
Through six games, the Avs are the NHL's highest-scoring team, finding the back of the net an impressive 24 times. They scored a dozen goals during their three losses to open the season, followed by another 12 in their three wins. So in other words, Colorado is consistent.
During Wednesday's edition of "Drivetime Sports," defenseman John-Michael Liles gave fans reason to believe the scoring barrage would continue. Sure, it's not shocking that he heaped praise on this teammates. But the way he did it was eye-opening.
"He's leaps and bounds ahead of everyone," Liles said about center Paul Stastny, who leads the team in scoring with 10 points. In practice and in games, the young Av is playing at a higher level that anyone else on the ice.
And what about one of Stastny's linemates? Liles raved about Ryan Smyth, too. Most notably, he was impressed with Smyth's highlight reel goal against the Kings.
"That was the best goal I've ever seen in person," Liles said. "The defenseman was an 18-year-old kid and I almost felt sorry for him. Welcome to the league, kid."
Will the Avs continue to score four goals per game? Probably not. But John-Michael Liles knows they have the firepower to remain a tough team to defend.
