On July 2, NASCAR announced, via a SPEED Channel special broadcast, the full list of 25 nominees for the first class of five to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The five inductees will be announced in October and inducted into the Hall of Fame in Charlotte in May 2010.

To be considered for nomination, drivers have to be at least four years into retirement. Other NASCAR personalities – like owners, crew chiefs, mechanics, etc. – have to have worked in the sport for a minimum of 10 years.

The nominees were selected by a 21-person committee made up of folks from NASCAR, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and several race tracks that are either historic or are currently on a NASCAR schedule.

“This first list of potential inductees is impressive, to say the least,” NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said. “Now comes the hard part — choosing only five to be inducted. Every single person on this list is worthy to be in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.”

The 25 nominees up for 2010 induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame are (in alphabetical order): Bobby Allison, Buck Baker, Red Byron, Richard Childress, Dale Earnhardt, Richie Evans, Tim Flock, Bill France Jr., Bill France Sr., Rick Hendrick, Ned Jarrett, Junior Johnson, Bud Moore, Raymond Parks, Benny Parsons, David Pearson, Lee Petty, Richard Petty, Fireball Roberts, Herb Thomas, Curtis Turner, Darrell Waltrip, Joe Weatherly, Glen Wood, and Cale Yarborough.

The Hall of Fame’s inaugural class of five will be chosen from these nominees by a voting process that will consist of 51 ballots. Fifty of those ballots will come from the 50-member voting panel that will be made up of the entire 21-member nominating committee, 14 members of the racing media, one representative from each of the four manufacturers currently competing in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series (Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, and Toyota), three retired owners, three retired crew chiefs, three retired drivers, and two automotive industry leaders.

The 51st and final ballot will contain the names of the top-five vote-getters in fan voting on NASCAR.com.

When fan voting opens later this month, fans can go to NASCAR.com/hall to register and vote. Each fan is only allowed one vote. Voting has not yet opened, but registration is already available. Those who register before voting actually opens will receive an e-mail notification to let them know when they can vote. Voting is expected to begin sometime this month and go on until September.
