The Subway Jalapeno 250 Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway went into overtime, but it wasn’t quite the typical green/white/checker finish. It was more like a green/white/yellow/checker finish, as the late laps of the race were caution filled.

“People got their money’s worth tonight,” race winner Clint Bowyer said in victory lane. “It was a great race.

That was perhaps at least partly due to double-file restarts throughout the race, a first for the Nationwide Series.

Bowyer took the checkered flag under caution to collect his first restrictor plate win in any of NASCAR’s touring series after leading 48 laps of the 100-lap race.

Although the Subway Jalapeno 250 was Bowyer’s last race behind the wheel of the No. 29 for 2009, his name will go above the window of the car for the remainder of the season. Bowyer had a competition going with fellow No. 29 pilots Stephen Leicht and Jeff Burton, with the driver posting the best results during his time in the car having his name on the car for the rest of the year. You can’t do any better than first.

It was another second-place finish for Kyle Busch.

“I’m proud of second,” Busch said.

Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Joey Logano finished third. Fellow Sprint Cup driver and Busch’s closest competition in the Nationwide points race, Carl Edwards, finished fourth.

Brad Keselowski rounded out the top-five.

In July 4 weekend fashion, the Nationwide Series provided several sparks for fans on hand in Daytona, but not in the form of fireworks. Two different drivers, Kerry Earnhardt and Kertus Davis, had to climb out of cars that had burst into flames following on-track contact.
Both drivers were able to climb out of the car under their own power, even though Earnhardt did say later that he suffered some smoke inhalation from the incident.

Apparently it was a bad night to be an Earnhardt. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was also out of the race early due to an accident. Kerry ended up with a 38th-place finish, and Dale Jr. wound up 40th.

* Finishes throughout the field, including some of those mentioned in this article are unofficial, pending NASCAR’s review of race film, due to the caution that ended the race. The finishes listed in the article are as reported at the time of posting.
