It sometimes seems that every strip mall in Staten Island boasts its own Chinese restaurant. They come and they go with regularity. Jade Island is an exception. This establishment has been a fixture in its location since 1972, and has a well-satisfied coterie of long time customers. The reason seems to be that there’s more to Jade Island than the standard Chinese take-out places scattered across the borough. Cantonese, Szechuan and Polynesian dishes are available, as well as a selection of “Tiki bar” type exotic cocktails. In keeping with the latter tradition, the cocktails are served in fancy containers topped in most cases by a tiny paper umbrella. The variety of drinks is illustrated with photographs in the colorful menu. The ambiance is Tiki/Polynesian as well with fountains, pufferfish and Tiki lamps, a large back lit transparency of a beach scene, and bamboo hut replicas. There is a similarly decorated bar adjacent to the dining room. The menu is basically that of a Chinese restaurant, with some special offerings that give a nod to the Polynesian ambiance. The dishes are well prepared and tasty, and served piping hot by a staff dressed in, of all things, Aloha shirts. Prices are comparable to other Chinese restaurants on Staten Island.
