Rutgers forward Gregory Echenique made a layup as time expired to give the Scarlet Knights a 58-56 win over the Drexel men’s basketball team on Friday night. After Rutgers guard Mike Rosario made one of two free throws, Drexel reserve forward Yannick Formbor put back a miss by guard Gerald Colds that tied the game at 56 apiece. But with 1.9 seconds remaining on the clock, Echenique gave Rutgers the victory despite a valiant effort by the Dragons.

As a team, Drexel was in foul trouble the whole game and frontcourt players Evan Neisler, Kevin Phillip and Daryl McCoy all fouled out at different points in the game. Meanwhile, starting power forward Leon Spencer also had some foul trouble but ended up leaving the game due to a wrist injury. All that considered, the Dragons still stayed in the game against a talented Rutgers team in another tough venue away from home.

The backcourt of Colds and junior point guard Jamie Harris, who had 12 and 10 points, respectively, were able to keep Drexel in this low scoring game. As always, coach Bruiser Flint’s team played intense, suffocating defense, keeping the game at Drexel’s pace. But the combination of the foul trouble and the scoring ability of Rosario and Echenique was just too much for Drexel to overcome.
The Dragons have no fallen to 0-3 on the season, with all three games coming down to the wire. The first game of the season saw Drexel lose to cross-town rival Saint Joseph’s in overtime, followed by a tough loss against Niagara on national television and now the buzzer-beating defeat at the hands of Rutgers.

While Drexel certainly shows some promise for this young 2009-10 season, Coach Flint still needs to find a way to finish games and get some victories. But this season is still young and the most important games for the Dragons are the conference games against Colonial Athletic Association foes. Drexel will look to get their first win of the season this coming Tuesday night as they battle their backyard neighbor, the University of Pennsylvania.
