It seems the Denver Police Department has taken responsibility for checking for fares on the RTD light rail.
The modus operandi is to have young officers in youthful civilian clothes check for tickets. On Friday night as the train was leaving the Alameda Station heading for downtown, two young men stood up and and identified themselves as Denver police officers and asked everyone on the car to display their tickets.
They didn't have to go far to find fare scofflaws. Sitting behind them were two eighteen-year-old young men who thought public transportation was an entitlement. They were escorted off the train at the 10th and Osage Station.
A couple of mornings ago, on the same line, an attractive young woman in tight-fitting clothing asked to see a ticket. Being used to overweight and sweaty middle-aged guys in Wackenhut Security uniforms asking for tickets, it did not seem possible she could be a fare inspector.
"Will we be getting off together?" was the response to her question and she pointed to the badge on a lanyard worn around her neck.
"Yes ma'am," was the new response. "Here's the ticket."
