Denver Congresswoman Diana DeGette will be holding another town hall meeting concerning proposed health care legislation on Saturday, September 12th at 10:00AM at South High School, 1700 East Louisiana Avenue. Doors will open at 9:15AM.
At the Congresswoman's August 31 health care forum at the Englewood Public Library, she was asked how the proposed reforms will be paid for. She gave no details, but said she did not want the reforms to add to the Federal deficit. She said an aide would e-mail financing details to anyone interested.
Congressional Aide Andrea Autobee sent an e-mail a couple of days ago with the following link: http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/104xx/doc10464/hr3200.pdf
It is an analysis from the Congressional Budget Office on health care reform's impact on the deficit. The highlight is:
According to CBO’s and JCT’s assessment, enacting H.R. 3200 would result in a net increase in the federal budget deficit of $239 billion over the 2010-2019 period. That estimate reflects a projected 10-year cost of the bill’s insurance coverage provisions of $1,042 billion, partly offset by net spending changes that CBO estimates would save $219 billion over the same period, and by revenue provisions that JCT estimates would increase federal revenues by about $583 billion over those 10 years.
Congresswoman DeGette does not want to add to the deficit and it is estimated that the legislation she wants passed will add $239 billion to the deficit over 10 years. To prevent adding to the deficit, $239 billion in revenue will need to be raised. Where will the money come from? Higher taxes?
It will be worth finding out.
