It’s the first weekend of the month so there’s a bunch of new shows opening. Here’s a brief rundown:

Lift Off” by Project Ethos (Vanguard in Hollywood)

This is a show of fashion, music, and art and will be held at the Vanguard in Hollywood. Artists whom are involved are: Glitz & Grime, Felicia of JAZMIN, Manuel Cuchilla, Chase Wood, Terry Kim, Gianni Coria, Justin Mentell, and Tomer Peretz.. The headlining musical act will be Paradiso Girls. There will also be a runway show featuring numerous up and coming high fashion designers.

“Lift Off” is one night only this Friday from 8pm-2am. Admission is $25 at the door for general admission and $50 for VIP. It is 21 and over.

“The Hive June Show”  (The Hive Gallery in Downtown LA)

As is the usual modus operandi at The Hive, their June show will have a handful of featured artists, a large number of mostly local talent in their group show, and their usual resident artists. Here is the breakdown of the featured artists and residents:

This show will be running until the end of the month. The opening reception is this Saturday from  8pm to 12:30am. Admission is $8.

“Land of Nowhere” (Hyaena Gallery in Burbank)

Opening this Saturday at the Hyena Gallery will be “Land of Nowhere” featuring artwork by David Cook. I know what you are thinking and I feel the same way. I didn’t know that dude from American Idol was an artist! Just kidding. It’s a different David Cook.

This show will be running until June 15th. The opening reception is this Saturday from 8pm-12am. Admission is free.

Mauricio Espinosa: “The Traveler Dilated” & Zackary Drucker “The Inability to Be Looked at and the Horror of Nothing to See” (Steve Turner Contemporary)

“The Traveler Dilated” is a collection of sculptures and drawings from LA artist Mauricio Espinosa. He’s an abstract artist and since it’s very difficult to describe abstract art, here is an excerpt from the presser:

In his sculptural work, Mauricio Espinosa creates subtle abstractions along the nexus of space and matter. He is interested in the threshold where one materiality ends and another begins, and endeavors to create structures which have zones of disappearance and emergence.”

Sounds like fun, yeah?

The second show opening at Steve Turner is Zachary Drucker’s “The Inability to Be Looked at and the Horror of Nothing to See.” Here’s an excerpt from that show:

“It is a site-specific phantasm that explores masochistic identity construction, new-age tyranny, and collective experience. Viewers were directed through a series of breathing exercises, visions, and traumas, while participants pluck hair from the androgynous, stripped body of the artist.”

Zachary Drucker is also, according to himself, “a limp wrested switch queen.”

Both shows will be running until July 2nd. The opening reception is this Saturday from 6pm-8pm.

“Santa Ana Art walk” (various galleries in the Santa Ana Art District)

Being the first Saturday of the month, Santa Ana will be having its monthly art walk. The big galleries to check out here are Grand Central,At Space Contemporary, and the OCCCA (on a side note OCCCA is the worst name ever for a gallery.) In addition to those galleries there are also open studios featuring art students from Cal State Fullerton.

This is will going on all day and night.
