If you haven’t gotten off the couch yet to prepare for the 2nd Annual Hip Hop Classic maybe you don’t have the right music.
Disclaimers: The following playlist of songs is not in any way a representation of what the LA Hip Hop Examiner deems to be “the best hip hop songs/lyrics ever,” they get the job done like Big Daddy Kane though. Below are suggestions for a workout, specifically jogging, sometimes the pep is in the lyrics, other times the beat and some songs give you both, find what works for you. Explicit lyrics and videos linked below.
Warm it up (I’m about to!)
Your warm up songs shouldn’t be any super-hype uptempo tracks. No lullabies, you want to get the blood flowing and muscles warm before you really start moving.
Chamillionaire-“Ridin’ Dirty”
Madcon- “Beggin’”
Mos Def- “A Ha”
Remy Ma- “Conceited”
Find your stride
This is the meat of your workout, from start to about 4-4.5K for a 5K run. You want your music to keep an uptempo pace and you may appreciate a few well placed motivational phrases like “…can’t no one stop me…” or humor to keep the jog/run enjoyable. Keep in mind that long intros are not always easy to avoid so you may not want many back to back tracks with that issue.
Bubba Sparxxx-“Ugly”
DJ Khaled-“Out Here Grinding”
DMX-“Get It On the Floor”
F.L.Y.-“Swag Surfin’”
Fu-Schnikens- “La Schmoove”
Kay L-“Go to Work”
Kid Sister-“Girlie Rock”
Lady of Rage-“Put You Up on Rage”
Lil Jon- “Snap Ya Fingaz”
M.I.A.-“Galang”
Missy Elliot- “Gossip Folks”/“Work It”
M.O.P.- “Ante Up”
Nicki Minaj- “I Get Crazy”
Trick Daddy-“Bet That”
Power-through
If you don’t have much steam that last few minutes, that final K or half you may want to end your list with something with a few “Don’t stop! Git it, git it!” lines (don’t be afraid of Uncle Luke). A fairly long playtime to continue the push through and allow you add some extra distance at the end is a plus but not a must.
Dem Franchize Boyz- “I Think they Like Me (So So Def Remix)”
Lil’ Boosie-“Wipe Me Down”
Pitbull-“Krazy”/“Move, Shake, Drop”
Rick Ross-“Everyday I’m Hustlin’”/ “Push It”
T.I.- “Motivation”
Cooldown and Stretch
This part of your list can be pretty much a free for all but likely something smooth to match some deep breathing is best. Here are a couple of goodies.
DJ Quik-“Can You Work Wit That”
Justin Warfield-“K Sera Sera”
Mystic-“The Life”
Redman- “I Know”
Feel free to add any suggestions of your own in the comments below! Step outta hip hop for a minute because even Jamiroquai got some “Canned Heat” for your heels!
Now that you have some musical motivation, get to it ASAP! See you at the Rose Bowl!
