In Governor Palin's speech announcing she would be stepping down as governor of the state of Alaska in two weeks, it wasn't clear what she has planned for the future. She said that her decision to step down would help Alaska. She also complained that someone in the media had said something about her youngest son Trigg.
The first time I watched the speech, I thought she was resigning because she couldn't stand the media attention of being the governor of Alaska. But the second time I watched the speech, it seemed that she might be resigning in order to work on her bid for the Republican presidential nomination for 2012.
Sarah Palin is well-liked by the conservative base of the Republican party, people who listen to Rush Limbaugh and people like Joe the Plumber. But as we saw in the 2008 elections, the base of the party wasn't enough to get John McCain or Sarah Palin elected. Many believe that Sarah Palin cost John McCain the presidency.
Governors who plan to run for president usually announce they will not run for re-election in their states but this is the first time I remember a governor resigning in the middle of a term. If Palin seeks the Republican nomination for the 2012 bid for the presidency, this move could hurt her chances.
Here is her speech announcing her resignation as governor of Alaska.
