In a news conference this morning, US Attorney Alice Martin announced a 101 count indictment of Larry Langford, mayor of Birmingham, William B Blount, an investment banker, and Albert LaPierre, a lobbyist, had been unsealed following the arrest by the FBI of mayor Langford and expected arrests of Lapierre and Blount.
Larry Langford, mayor of Birmingham, was arrested early this morning. He claims the charges lodged against him are false and says a jury will see the truth. The FBI took Lanford into custody today. He was indicted on charges of money laundering, fraud conspiracy, filing false tax returns, and bribery.
The indictment charges stem from the period Larry Langford served as president of the Jefferson County commission and head of the Jefferson county department of financial services from November, 2002 to November 2006. US Attorney Martin chided Langford saying he should have had Jefferson County's best interests in mind while handling finances for the county. Langford is accused of receiving over $7.1 million for personal use by taking bribes and steering lucrative dollars in return to Blount's company. LaPierre acted as a go-between.
Lapierre and Blount are expected to be charged today too. LaPierre plans to turn himself into authorities and Blount is expected to arrive in Birmingham today.
