The big 3 automakers aren't the only ones struggling to survive in the current economy. In arguments against the federal government bailing out the US automakers, some have said that Japanese automakers are providing jobs in states like Alabama and Tennessee but such arguments may not hold up under scrutiny.
According to the Birmingham Business Journal, the Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, located in Lincoln, just east of Birmingham, plans to cut production to the tune of 12,000 vehicles between January and March of 2009.
The Alabama Honda plant had already cut production of the Odyssey and Pilot between August and October after seeing sales fall by 21% from the previous year. While Honda didn't lay off any employees during the period, Honda representatives stated that employees would be given several options. They could take time off with no pay and no attendance penalty and some would be paid to perform "non-production" jobs.
