This week's episode returns to the plot set up that makes Fringe watchable and interesting. The Fringe team not only solves a case to which only this group can get to the bottom, but also continues to delve into the overall arching storyline of alternative universes and the safety of the human race.
Now that the government is no longer backing the team's efforts, Astrid has been searching the FBI database to track unusual cases that might fit the Pattern. A recent incident surrounds a bombing that uses humans as weapons of mass destruction. As it turns out a rogue US military officer has determined that the Observer's efforts are not passive and impartial, but an actual threat to human existence. The Colonial believes that he is observing in order to gather data that can be used to annihilate our civilization. His human bombs were used to kill couriers delivering briefcases full of top secret research. His scheme was to send a message to the Observer that he himself was being observed.
Olivia finally experiences her first headache which her new inter-dimensional mentor had warned her about. Through his own techniques and inquiries, he is trying to help her regain the memories she has lost. She is struggling to understand his methods and does not appreciate his perceived game playing that apparently has something to do with bowling. She has got to start remembering her trip to the other side.
Peter's background although extremely vague and disjointed is starting to become more evident. He has connections in Iraq as he spent time there as a civilian contractor. It is clear that his activities overseas were covert and not particularly above board; however, once again he seems to know a guy who can get the answers the team needs regardless of what he did to make the acquaintance.
The beginnings of a war are arising and the team knows what side it is on, but unfortunately, it has not figured out who exactly they will be battling much less why. The next few episodes will hopefully get them (and us) closer to having an answer so the counter attack can be planned.
