Spoiler Alert: For those who have not seen Episode 1 of the new season of Fringe on FOX, please note that this article may contain spoilers.

The following gives us an insight into what we now know (or think we know) and what has been left unanswered:

1) Agent Olivia Dunham has been on the other side, but has no memory of what took place "there." It is unclear whether the head injury from the car accident caused the memory loss, or the travel between parallel universes.

2) A new character has shown up - a young FBI agent who has been introduced to the Fringe Division. She has broken into top secret files and has begun reviewing past cases. She appears to be making biblical connections to these strange events.

3) Charlie is Charlie until he isn't Charlie anymore - which leads to the next point.

4) Another new character is introduced who appears to be a shapeshifter. He/she/it can take the essence of another human being by killing them and then putting a piece of "tech" in the roof of the victim's mouth and suck the life force out of him or her. The shapeshifter is seen in the last scene taking the dead body of Charlie and dumping him into a furnace while he appears in the form of Charlie. The shifter has been sent from "over there" to kill Agent Dunham. He is a soldier who has been given orders and communicates through a typewriter that is somehow connected to the other side. He must keep Olivia from getting a message back to her world and subsequently saving everyone.

5) Walter is concerned about Peter and checks to make sure he is breathing while he sleeps. He likes custard but does not like flan and wants to make it to celebrate Peter's birthday.

6) The "powers that be" seem to want to pull funding for the program and Agent Broyles must justify why the Fringe Division should not be shut down. Nina Sharp speaks with him, telling him that he must do what he has always done and kisses him indicating a past romantic relationship. Peter provides a piece of tech taken from the shapeshifter to show proof that what they are doing is real and the government will benefit from their efforts.

What is clear is that Olivia is in danger, Peter has stepped up and is no longer just a Walter-keeper but someone who is an active member of the team, Broyles has a deeper, emotional side to his personality and has a vested interest in the activities of the group and Charlie can no longer be trusted.

Many questions still remain unanswered, but future episodes are sure to add more pieces to the puzzle. Nothing appears to be as it seems.
