America’s bedfellows have long been questionable and at times even outrageous. Why is it then, when we’ve surrounded ourselves with mass murderers, tyrants, and some of the worst violators of human rights in the world, do we now have a president who has undergone not one, but two world “apology” tours, appearing so humble that even British journalists have reported that he has been more critical of his own country while on foreign soil than any other president? America has “dictated” to other countries? Please.
Why, when surrounded by those who could only hope to achieve the level of accomplishment and morality that we emanate, must we feel the need to be humbled?
Because we’re the celebrities. That’s why.
If you reflect on our culture as a whole, it’s always who’s on top that we want to bring down. Of course, the general notion is that after having completed middle school and perhaps high school, human maturity sets in and we get over all that.
Yeah...not so much.
To prove my point, here’s a pop quiz (don’t you just love quizzes):
1. Who is Angelina Jolie married to?
2. Which one of the Olsen twins had an eating disorder?
3. Who is the majority whip in the U.S. House of Representatives?
Just for the record, this author had to Google #3 to tell you that it’s James Clyburn from South Carolina. Eric Cantor however was a top-of-the-head give-in had his position been referred to. Go red!
Just a note: When you open the photo of James, be careful. The photo size is gonna give you one mean lookin’ eyeball in your face....
The assumption here is that you did know #1 and #2, voluntarily or not, and #3 was a toss up - odds not in your favor. Get to the point you say? Okay.
People get married, divorced, go through rehab, lie, cheat, steal, etc. every single day, but when a certain handful of individuals (i.e., celebrities) do something normal for everyone else, it’s outrageous and cover worthy. It’s like being famous for something suddenly elevates you to “God” status, and the microscope on your life is free to anyone for their viewing pleasure and criticism. Punishment for your success, more or less. Of course, America has done more than appearing on a reality show to earn her place in celebrity heaven...but the principal still applies.
Back to the political focus.
Let’s say America takes the red carpet in San Francisco. Did she ride in a fuel-efficient limousine? Were her clothes made in a factory that uses child labor or takes away American jobs (i.e., illegal immigrant jobs)? What was the carbon footprint of that explosive action sequence in her last movie? Is her purse made of real leather? Please tell me that’s a faux fur coat. Is that 100% recycled paper she’s signing her autograph on? Was it responsible for her to make that gun reference in her last Billboard hit?
See where this is going? You wouldn’t apply these same standards to the welfare mom who’s now stripping so she can “provide for her children”, now would you?
Just for fun, let’s look at America stepping into the United Nations assembly:
Unlike in America, humanity passionately craves commitment to the Truth, devotion to God, quest for Justice and respect for the dignity of human beings.
America is a deadbeat donor - what the heck are you good for?
Besides giving us a snazzy building on land in your country, leading and funding every major world initiative, and shedding countless gallons of the blood of your citizens in selfless acts for world peace...
The list could go on.
So in sum, perhaps Barry could take a brief trip through our history books and...well...shut up and start playing for the right team.
