If there’s one big difference that can be named between our version of democracy and that of the rest of the world, it’s the stability it holds. When newspapers tout stories about parliaments around the world dismissing all elected officials over a disagreement, one just shakes their head at such a lack of civility towards the freedom a democratic system of government should provide.
So what’s the deal with Albany?
Or rather, what’s the deal with New York in general? Here hails Spitzer the sex fiend, Patterson the inept (also a fiend apparently), Bloomberg the monarchist, the Clinton dynasty, Rangel the forgetful, TurboTax Tim...and that’s just pulling from the front page news of late. Now we have a coup led by Republicans joining forces with a domestic violence guru (guru by personal experience that is). This would make great entertainment if these weren’t also the same folks being begged for a bailout to avoid the raise in MTA prices to make up for some budget gaps.
For the cherry on top, their new “coalition” is all about reforming the system to make individual senators more powerful in their ability to bring legislation to the floor. Is it time to duck and cover yet? Then again, maybe we shouldn’t complain. This could be Chicago.
