I took my girls out to dinner last Friday and then headed over to Best Buy to window shop. I was taken aback by their obvious lack of inventory. Empty shelves, what seemed like a quarter of the CD's missing, misc. items shifted and strewn about to present a false presence of durable goods. Today I awoke to find a two minute blurb from Erik Buell to say he won't be making motorcycles anymore, WOW!!
This down economy is affecting every nook and cranny of most, if not all industry sectors. This recession is far from over. That's not news I'm unaware of, it's just becoming more of a reality on a more grandiose stage.
Erik Buell made motorcycles for twenty-five years. He came from nowhere to take on the industry giants. Most outside the motorcycle industry have never even heard of Buell.
I could feel the emotion in his eyes and the taught armature which held his facial expressions that it was with great sadness that he made this announcement. No Obama bailout, no trumpeting fanfare, no mega news conference. Rather a simple and solemn announcement directed to his peers, the tight circle of friends in the industry he's made over the years.
I am sad as well and I wish only success for you Erik, and all your employees in their future endeavors
