Sometimes a beer is that thing you reach for at the end of a hard day’s work. Sometimes multiple beers are called for and it doesn’t matter which watered-down swill it is, so long as it performs its brain-erasing capabilities. Yet sometimes, beer is a special treat, something to be slowly savored and revered.
City Beer Store in SoMa has two tasting events for such beers; one this weekend, one to help get you through to hump day.
Tomorrow, June 13, at 4 p.m., stop by for a treat from our SF friends Speakeasy for Barrel-Aged Old Godfather. What is already a Barleywine rich in character has been aged into a beer you can’t refuse. Aged separately in oak, bourbon, and Applejack barrels, then blended, this is draft only so get in, sip up, and remember it fondly.
If you discover that you’re having a hectic week and it’s only Tuesday, pop back into City Beer on June 16. Starting at 5:30, The Bruery‘s Patrick Rue, direct from Orange County, will spend a couple hours hanging out with Bay Area ale enthusiasts. While his whole line of beers are incredible, and CBS isn’t saying for sure what special treats he’s bringing, keep in mind his brewery just celebrated its first anniversary, which was marked with the release of one of its first creations, Papier. Never having had it, all I can tell you is there are three versions, aged in bourbon, brandy, and rye whiskey barrels, respectively.
Go ahead and treat yourself. You deserve it.
