Lots of drunk people. Bring das kinders.

Originally celebrating the wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in Munich in 1810 (where the focus was horse racing, not beer), Oktoberfest has grown into the world’s largest party where around 6,000,000 people kick up their lederhosen and polka Munchen nights away while chugging litres of Festbier (Marzen). But considering Southwest doesn’t have a $99 fare to Munich, here’s the next best way to celebrate. And remember, BYOB (bring your own boot-glass).

Grab your fräulein or an Oompah Loompah and head down to the 2nd annual Oaktoberfest in the Dimond on Saturday, October 10, from 11-6. Among the 19 breweries pouring in the Bill Brand Memorial Biergarten this year:

  1. Linden Street (Oakland)
  2. Pacific Coast (Oakland)
  3. Triple Rock (Berkeley)
  4. Jupiter (Berkeley)
  5. Drake's (San Leandro)
  6. 21st Amendment (San Francisco)
  7. Thirsty Bear (San Francisco)
  8. Speakeasy (San Francisco)
  9. Beach Chalet (San Francisco)
  10. Iron Springs (Fairfax)
  11. Ale Industries (Concord)
  12. Marin (Larkspur)
  13. Lagunitas (Petaluma)
  14. Dempsey's (Petaluma)
  15. Moylan's (Novato)
  16. Santa Cruz Ale Works (Santa Cruz)
  17. Rubicon (Sacramento)
  18. Pyramid (Berkeley)
  19. Trumer Pils (Berkeley)

Furthermore, local homebrew club the Mad Zymurgists http://www.madzymurgists.org/ are handling a homebrew competition aspect for entrants who brewed the following, accepted German styles of beer:

  1. Munich Helles
  2. Dortmunder Export
  3. German Pilsner (Pils)
  4. Vienna Lager
  5. Oktoberfest
  6. Munich Dunkel
  7. Schwarzbier (Black Beer)
  8. Maibock/Helles Bock
  9. Traditional Bock
  10. Doppelbock
  11. Eisbock
  12. Kölsch
  13. Northern German Altbier
  14. Düsseldorf Altbier
  15. Weizen/Weissbier
  16. Dunkelweizen
  17. Weizenbock
  18. Roggenbier (German Rye Beer)
  19. Berliner Weisse
  20. Classic Rauchbier
  21. Other Smoked Beer (mit German base style only)

Admission is free (beer is not) and the event is anchored at the corner of Fruitvale Ave. and MacArthur Blvd. David Hasselhoff, eat yer heart out.
