It's definitely entertaining, but is
it credible?

Alex Rodriguez is a baseball phenomenon. He's the highest paid player in baseball history. He was the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs. But he's also made headlines for admitted steroid use and his marriage-ending relationship with Madonna. What makes him tick?

That's the question that Selena Roberts has tried to answer in her new book, A-Rod - The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez. Roberts originally broke the news of A-Rod's steroid use in February 2009 in a SI.com article, and with the book, tries to go beyond her initial story to look at the past that made him who he is, as well as the tabloid headlines that follow him now.

Roberts makes some dramatic allegations about A-Rod on the field. According to Roberts, Rodriguez was juicing as far back as high school. She claims he was pitch-tipping to opposing players while playing with the Rangers, in an effort to boost his stats. Unfortunately, there are few, if any, sources to back up her claims. The anonymous and unattributed statements leave the reader wondering how much should be believed.

The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez also looks as A-Rod's childhood as well as his life off the field. Even non-baseball fans have been fascinated with his public persona, as his image as the Mr. Clean of pro sports was peeled back to expose trips to strip clubs and swingers bars, his extra-marital relationship with Madonna, and even his adherence to Kabbalah. But again, the poor sourcing is a problem. Anonymous sources, or sometimes no sources, hurt credibility.

A-Rod - The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez is a fast and entertaining read, but it doesn't rise to the level of being an authoritative look at a seemingly complex man.
