The resources available to local video game developers is about to expand. In 2010, local casual and advergame developer Arkadium will sponsor a workshop series designed to cover game design’s best practices, tips and tricks.

Arkadium’s recent press release announced “The Game Development Design Series” as part of a partnership between Gamelab’s founder Eric Zimmerman and Arkadium. CEO and co-founder of Arkadium Kenny Rosenblatt said the design series is a great way to bring the community together.

“There is a thriving game community here, and I think it gets overshadowed a lot,” Rosenblatt said. “I want people to know about it and I want it to grow bigger than it is now.”

Rosenblatt said acknowledging the industry in New York is essential to the growth of locally grown games. High costs of living and running a business within the city limits often deter would-be developers from making their home in Manhattan.

“I want to let people there is a thriving community here, and I want to let people know they can earn a living in New York making games,” Rosenblatt said. “Selfishly the workshops will let us know who is out there and that we’re hiring and that there are positions available for qualified applicants.”

According to Rosenblatt, the design series features subjects including revenue models and the fundamentals of development.

“We will really focus on how you make a game fun,” Rosenblatt said. “If you have those core fundamentals it will allow you to do much greater things.”

“The Game Development and Design Series” will begin in the first quarter of 2010.
