In this Sept. 24, 2000 file photo, Tennessee Titans Steve McNair cheers his teammates on after the Pittsburgh Steelers scored to take the lead in the fourth quarter in a NFL football game in Pittsburgh. McNair, who led the Tennessee Titans within a yard of forcing overtime in the 2000 Superbowl and led the Baltimore Ravens to the playoffs, has been shot and killed on Saturday, July 4, 2009. Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron confirmed that police were called to a residence and found McNair and a woman shot to death inside. Aaron said authorities don't yet know the circumstances of the shooting. (AP)

Robert Gaddy, a friend of NFL quarterback Steve McNair, made the 911 call to police after finding the football legend covered in blood.

McNair, 36, was shot to death in his Nashville condominium on Saturday, along with a woman, reportedly his girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, 20.

Wayne Neely rents the condo with McNair and was first on the scene, but didn’t realize the two had been shot. He called Gaddy, who arrived at the condo around 1:35 p.m and called for help.

Gaddy played college football with McNair at Alcorn State and was told by police not to discuss exactly what he saw at the condo or what he knows about Kazemi.

Gaddy was able to tell the Tennessean that what he saw “…was like something you might imagine seeing on TV or in the movies, but never imagine you would see it first-hand, to have that happen to someone you love. I am still shook up.”

“When I walked in I knew immediately [something was wrong]. I didn’t have to touch him [McNair]. I called 911 and told them they needed to get there. I was holding my breath and hoping it wasn’t true,” said Gaddy. “I didn’t want to touch him but I saw blood on my best friend and I was almost panicking myself. It looked like he was gone and I didn’t want to believe it.”

Fighting back tears, Gaddy continued, “I was the one who found him and made the discovery that this happened, and I will never get that picture out of my head. I just want someone to tell me this didn’t happen.”

“As human beings we all have faults, but Steve McNair didn’t deserve that. I’m having a hard time with this. We are all having a hard time with this,” said Gaddy.

The Tennessean is also reporting the police are not actively looking for suspects and stopped just short of calling the deaths a murder-suicide.

An autopsy on both McNair and Kazemi is scheduled to take place on Sunday.
